7 DAY INFUSED WATER CHALLENGE DAY 3 - ORANGE BLUEBERRY WATER

7-day-infused-water-challenge-day-3-orange-blueberry-water-nairobi-kitchen-recipe

And so continues my 7 Day Infused Water Challenge. It's day 3 now and I can't believe how much I am loving infused water. It removes all the basic nature of water and gives it a fresh new taste. These infused waters are making me want to drink more water. It's simple yet makes such a huge difference. Fresh blueberries are one of the most popular summer treats of all time. They are sweet, succulent, full of nutrients, and can be eaten freshly picked as well as incorporated into a variety of recipes. Anthocyanins that are responsible for the blueberry's color, contributes to the numerous health benefits of consuming the fruit. Consuming fruits and vegetables of all kinds has long been associated with a reduced risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions. The iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and vitamin K in blueberries all contribute to building and maintaining bone structure and strength.Maintaining a low sodium intake is essential to lowering blood pressure. Blueberries are naturally free of sodium and contain potassium, calcium, and magnesium, all of which have been found to decrease blood pressure naturally. The blueberry's fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and phytonutrient content, coupled with its lack of cholesterol, all support heart health. The fiber in blueberries helps lower the total amount of cholesterol in the blood and decrease the risk of heart disease. Oranges are far more than just delicious; they are packed with nutrients that can give you many health benefits. Oranges are one of the best sources you can find for vitamin C. Eating oranges is a great way to avoid easy bruising, slow wound healing, gingivitis, dry and splitting hair, dry and splotchy skin, nosebleeds, digestive disorders, high blood pressure, certain cancers, gallbladder diseases, and many more. Thiamine (vitamin B1) helps produce new cells and break down carbs, Riboflavin (vitamin B2) helps in producing red blood cells and fighting free radicals. These nutrients are found in Oranges, others include Niacin (vitamin B3) helps boost the good HDL cholesterol, Pantothenic Acid (vitamin B5) helps produce sex and stress-related hormones and promotes healthy skin, and Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) helps regulate homocysteine levels and fights inflammation. Citrus fruits of which Oranges are, have among the highest concentration of folic acid compared with other foods. Folate is especially beneficial for pregnant women, since it helps prevent birth defects related to the baby’s brain and spine, reducing risks by50 percent to 70 percent. Source. 7 DAY INFUSED WATER CHALLENGE DAY 1 - PINEAPPLE JALAPENO WATER

7-day-infused-water-challenge-day-1-pineapple-jalapeno-water-nairobi-kitchen-recipe

I did an Infused Water recipe last week and ever since I have wanted to do more of them. Drinking the Citrus Cucumber water was so refreshing I was wondering where it has been all my life! Infusing your water with fruits, vegetables, spices and even edible flowers makes drinking water fun and wholesome. These ingredients will give your water a sweet and refreshing taste. When infusing water, the longer you let it rest the stronger the flavour will be. For Citrus fruits with peels on however, you want to drink the water within a few hours because it tends to get bitter. You can reuse the fruits for more batches but not more than three times. Now I have decides to have a 7 Day infused water challenge where I will make and post different infused water combinations. The first one is Pineapple and Jalapeno Pepper Water. Get your sweet tangy flavour from the Pineapples and a hot kick flavour from the Jalapeno. You can remove the seeds from the Jalapeno if you want a milder chili taste. I will do the seven days infused water challenge and give you my findings on these flavourful waters

CITRUS CUCUMBER WATER

citrus-cucumber-water-nairobi-kitchen-recipe

It's thirsty Thursday. Thirsty yet? Well, today I won't be boozing you up. I want you to be healthy so I'll share with you fruit infused water. Fruit infused waters are hydrating, healthy and homemade. Which means that you can combine the fruit infused water with your favorite combinations. When it comes to this drink, you can infuse your water with any number of spice, vegetables, fruits, herbs and even edible flowers. Herbs include Parsely, Rosemary, Cilantro, Thyme, Basil and Mint. For Spices you can use Vanilla Bean, Cinnamon Sticks, Garlic cloves, Cardamon Pods and fresh Ginger. Edible flowers go for Violets, Rose, Pansies, Lavender, Hibiscus and Citrus Blossoms. Fruits are Berries (can be fresh or frozen), Pears, Melon, Apples, Citrus fruits and Tropical Fruits. The best Vegetables to infuse in water are Carrots, Cucumber, Fennel and Celery. Use filtered water but if it isn't available use clean tap water. You can peel the fruits and vegetables or leave them on and avoid fruits that are too ripe or bruised, and don't use herbs that are withered or not fresh. The flavour of the fruits and vegetables will infuse more quickly with the water if you use small cubes or thin slices. Citrus fruits infuse pretty instant, Herbs take a longer time to infuse while the Berries take the longest and may even release color into the water. When infusing your water with the fruits, spices, herbs, vegetables and edible flowers, let the water sit for a few hours to allow all the flavours infuse completely. Stay hydrated and live healthy with fruit infused water that will make drinking water something that you look foward to instead of a chore that you must do. Looking foward to making more of these flavored drinks. Have you made fruit infused water and which is your favorite?

THIRSTY THURSDAY - VODKA TONIC

thirsty-thursday-vodka-tonic-cocktail-nairobi-kitchen-recipe

Thirsty Thursday here! We have moved from Tuesday, who drinks Cocktails on Tuesday? Me. Sometimes. Hehe. My attempt at making Cocktails is still on a learning curve. I would be making every other day but some ingredients haven't been available. Well, enough of my rants, today's Cocktail is simple with 3 ingredients that are easily available. Cocktails are meant to be slowly enjoyed after a long day or when hanging out with friends. Something to note, Tonic water is drier than other sodas giving it that slightly bitter taste due to the quinine in it. A vodka tonic is an alcoholic drink made with varying proportions of vodka and tonic water.Vodka tonics are frequently garnished with a slice of lime. Served On the rocks; poured over ice. Standard garnish is citrus fruit, usually lime or lemon. The standard drink ware is usually a Highball glass. Commonly used ingredients is One part vodka. One to three parts tonic water, to taste. The preparation is Mix and serve-stirred, not shaken. One commonly used recipe is one part vodka and one part tonic water in a tumbler over ice, with a generous lime wedge squeezed into it.

GERMAN APPLE STRUDEL COCKTAIL

I know, it's not Thirsty Tuesday yet but hey, life is about breaking some rules and living it up. I' m really getting better at my Cocktail making game! Allow me to digress a bit, so I recently saw a preview for a new reality TV show where the contestants are either professional or amateur mixologists or simply bar tenders, the goal each week will be to prepare and present the most unique and spectacular African Cocktail! So you can imagine my excitement at getting to see all these great mixologists at work! I always see in movies bar tenders doing all those crazy tricks throwing bottles around and mixing exotic drinks and I'm really impressed! Okay so back to today's Cocktail Drink. Apple juice has this clean tangy sweet taste that just dances on your palette. Add Vodka, then sprinkle with Cinnamon and you have the base for a literally perfect drink. I know it's still cold in Nairobi, it being July and all, but, the sweetness, spicy tangy flavors of this drink will warm you up. Or you can just curl up with your partner and watch a James Bond Movie, Pierce Brosnan all the way for me 😉😉.. lets get mixin'. This German Apple Strudel Cocktail adapted from here. I was just reading on the different Cocktails that one can make and I stumbled upon this recipe so I decided I might as well try it, it looked interesting and delicious. The best thing about Cocktails is that you can always add whatever condiments, spices, bitters and flavors that you like. You can experiment and find out what works best for your taste buds. So enjoy my recreation of this amazing cocktail, try it and let me know what you think!

I was told it is Sweet wine and true to their word, it truly is,that sweet, acidic divine flavor of excellence is what you get from this Wine. The Producer of this wine is Bürgerspital originating from Franconia which is located in the northern state of Bavaria, Germany made from Silvaner White Grapes. The Wine comes in a rounded classic shape. It has a Yellowish almost golden straw color, with a slight presence of carbon dioxide. The smell is divine composed of Mineral notes of  green apple and light herbaceous touch. It is a sweet White Wine that has initial strong acidity taste yet sweet to the palate. It is a dry, light and refreshing wine that brings back the taste of Green Apples. You can pair with Japanese food and even goes great with Oysters. A Great Dessert Wine. Awesomennes, that's my verdict of this Wine. Which Wines have you tried? WELCOME TO NAIROBI KITCHEN + WATERMELON LOOKALIKE BREAD

water-melon-lookalike-bread-nairobi-kitchen-recipe

hELLO fOoD NeRdS!
Welcome to my li'l kitchen where I have fun preparing food from home. Nothing says welcome than a hot homemade food prepared with lotsa love and care. Nothing makes me happier than preparing a meal where I can share with friends and family. I love when I can make something out of crazy, simple and even seemingly complicated ingredients. Cooking is kind of like my therapy, it gets me excited and looking forward to doing something different and special each day. So welcome to my nerdy food kitchen and lets enjoy cooking and discovering together. Growing up I always loved watching mom cook. Food just fascinated me and I loved the way ingredients were combined to bring something delicious. I couldn't wait to grow up and also cook since the kitchen was out of bounds for my little hands. I guess I was the kid who didn't mind being sent for errands for foodstuff if it meant that I would stay in the kitchen as mom or anyone else was cooking. As I got older cooking just made sense and it came so easy for me. I hoped for the day I would have my own kitchen where I could experiment with recipes. Still waiting for my own kitchen but I'm glad I am old enough to be left in the kitchen alone 😉😅😆. Cooking is just amazing! So welcome to this little "kitchen" space of mine and let us discover food, recipes and more! Be a Kitchen Nerd with me😍😍😙😋😜.
