FAQs: Chocolate Burfi

What is Chocolate Burfi?
Chocolate Burfi is a delicious Indian sweet made by combining milk solids (traditionally khoya or milk powder) with sugar and cocoa powder. It’s often made in two layers—one classic milk burfi base and a top chocolate layer—creating a rich, fudgy texture that melts in the mouth. It's commonly prepared during festive seasons like Diwali or Raksha Bandhan and is popular for its simplicity and indulgent flavor.

Can I use milk powder instead of khoya?
Yes, many home cooks use milk powder as a convenient substitute for khoya. Mixing milk powder with a bit of cream or milk replicates the richness and consistency of fresh khoya, making the recipe more accessible without compromising on flavor.

How do I store Chocolate Burfi and how long does it last?
Chocolate Burfi can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2–3 days, especially in cool weather. For longer shelf life (up to a week), refrigerate it. Bring it to room temperature before serving to enjoy its soft texture.

Is Chocolate Burfi gluten-free?
Yes, traditional Chocolate Burfi recipes do not use any wheat-based ingredients, making them naturally gluten-free. Always double-check labels if using packaged milk powder or cocoa to ensure there are no hidden gluten additives.

Can I make it vegan?
Traditional Chocolate Burfi contains dairy, but you can experiment with plant-based alternatives like coconut milk powder or almond milk powder and dairy-free butter. While the texture and taste may vary slightly, a vegan version is possible with a bit of creativity.
