Red Velvet French Toast – FAQs

What is Red Velvet French Toast?
Red Velvet French Toast is a luxurious twist on the classic breakfast dish, featuring bread dipped in a red velvet-inspired custard mixture. It includes subtle cocoa notes, vanilla, and the iconic red coloring, often served with cream cheese glaze or whipped cream for a dessert-like finish.

What kind of bread works best?
Thick slices of brioche, challah, or Texas toast are ideal because they absorb the custard well without falling apart. Day-old bread works best for a rich, custardy center and crispy exterior.

Can I make it ahead of time?
Yes, you can prepare the custard and soak the bread slices ahead of time. Cook just before serving for the best texture. You can also fully cook and refrigerate them, then reheat in a skillet or oven.

Do I need food coloring?
Traditional red velvet flavor includes red coloring, but it’s optional. Natural alternatives like beetroot powder or juice can be used, or you can skip it altogether for a more classic look.

How do I serve it?
Red Velvet French Toast is best served warm, topped with cream cheese glaze, maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries. It makes a great brunch dish or a special breakfast treat.
