Jalebi – FAQs

1. What is jalebi?

Jalebi is a popular Indian and East African sweet made by deep-frying a fermented batter in circular shapes, then soaking them in sugar syrup to create a crispy, syrupy dessert.

2. What ingredients are used in jalebi?

The batter typically includes all-purpose flour (maida), yogurt (or fermented batter), water, and sometimes a pinch of turmeric or saffron for color. The syrup is made from sugar, water, and often flavored with cardamom or rose water.

3. How long should the batter ferment?

Traditionally, the batter ferments for 8–12 hours at room temperature to develop slight sourness and better texture.

4. How to make jalebi crispy?

Frying at the right temperature (around 350°F/175°C) ensures the jalebi is crispy outside but soft inside. Soaking in warm syrup rather than hot syrup helps maintain texture.

5. Can jalebi be stored?

Jalebi is best eaten fresh for maximum crispiness. Stored in an airtight container at room temperature, they remain good for 1–2 days but tend to soften over time.
