Celebrate Election Day with vibrant Kenyan Flag Crepes—colorful, delicious, and made to inspire national pride. Perfect for breakfast or dessert, these festive crepes bring flavor and patriotism to your plate. It has truly been a whirlwind of a few months. It has been filled with a mix of anticipation, tension, and constant conversation as the nation prepares for the elections. The elections are taking place tomorrow, on the 8th of August, 2017. The air feels thick with expectation. As the day has drawn closer, everything around us has become more intense. It feels impossible to escape. There's a never-ending stream of political updates, arguments, predictions, and debates.

Whether you are at home or on the road, politics seems to be everywhere. In a matatu or scrolling through your phone, you encounter it. The television blares heated panel discussions. The radio is dominated by campaign advertisements and interviews. Social media feeds have turned into battlegrounds of opposing views. Even the simplest act of checking the news online has felt overwhelming. The energy in the country is charged, and it is hard not to absorb some of that restlessness.

At one point, I found myself completely drained by it all. I decided to take a break from the continuous cycle of information. I stopped watching the news altogether. I slowly began to filter what I allowed myself to engage with on social media. The tension was beginning to feel like a heavy cloud. I needed space to breathe. I wanted to focus on something uplifting and joyful.

That is when I turned back to my kitchen, my happy place. Cooking has always been a kind of therapy for me. It grounds me, brings me peace, and helps me express myself in ways words often cannot. I wanted to channel the upcoming election day into something meaningful. I realized making Kenyan flag-inspired crepes would be symbolic.

The Kenyan flag is deeply symbolic. The black represents the people of Kenya. The red stands for the blood shed in the fight for independence. The green symbolizes the land. The white signifies peace and unity. These are more than colors, they tell the story of our nation’s past, present, and future. With that in mind, I decided to celebrate our unity and resilience in a colorful, lighthearted way through food.

I used a basic crepe recipe. I incorporated food coloring to create the four colors of our flag: black, red, white, and green. I made these crepes a few days in advance. I intentionally saved the moment to share them on this very important day, Election Day. It is a way of showing my patriotic spirit. It also serves as a gentle reminder that life continues even after the ballots have been cast.

It was a fun and surprisingly emotional experience to create something so visually connected to my country. As I whisked the batter and added the vibrant food coloring, I felt a quiet pride settle over me. It was a small gesture, perhaps, but one that filled my kitchen with color and my heart with purpose.

When the crepes were ready, I took a step back to admire them. The stack of thin, soft pancakes in our national colors felt celebratory. They also felt hopeful. The black crepes were especially striking. To be honest, it was a little strange at first to eat something that color. It is not every day that you bite into a black crepe! The flavor was unchanged. It was delicious as always. Every bite was worth it for the visual impact and the symbolism behind it.

There is something very special about taking a traditional recipe and adding a personal, creative twist to it. Cooking is not only about nourishment—it is also a form of expression, celebration, and storytelling. In this case, the crepes became my canvas for patriotic pride and unity. I wanted them to represent more than a meal. I wanted them to carry a message: that no matter the outcome of an election, we remain one people. The election day is exactly that—a day. It will pass, and when it does, we will all still be here. We will still be neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family. Our country will still need us to move forward together.

What I love most about this idea is that it is not limited to national holidays or elections. You can create themed crepes in any color combination that holds meaning for you. Perhaps you want to honor your favorite football team by using their jersey colors. You might also want to celebrate your school spirit by layering crepes in the school’s signature hues. Maybe it is a birthday, an anniversary, or a graduation. Whatever the occasion, this is a fun and creative way to serve a simple dish. It makes people smile and feel connected.

The process of making the crepes was also a lovely reminder of the joy found in slowing down. Among all the chaos and noise surrounding the election, I found peace. The rhythm of preparing each crepe brought me this peace. Pouring the batter, I swirled it across the pan. I waited for the edges to lift. It all forced me to be present in the moment. It reminded me that while big national moments matter, so do the quiet ones we create in our homes.

Food has always had the power to bring people together, and that is exactly what these crepes did. I served them to my family with a variety of spreads and fillings. Some were sweet, and some were savory. We spent the morning laughing, chatting, and discussing the upcoming vote. The crepes sparked conversation, joy, and a much-needed pause in a time of tension.

As we head out to vote, I carry this sense of grounding with me. I hope others are also finding small ways to stay calm and centered. We need to take care of ourselves and one another during these emotionally charged times. It is important to do so through food, music, conversation, or rest. Elections can be deeply personal. They often stir up passionate opinions. However, they are also an opportunity to reflect on the kind of community we want to be.

Let us remember, as we mark our ballots. We queue at the polling stations. Peace is not something that happens by accident. Every single day, we choose it in how we treat each other. We choose it in how we speak and how we listen. We even choose it in how we cook and share meals with the people around us.

So yes, these flag-inspired crepes may seem like a small gesture. However, for me, they represent a hopeful spirit. They symbolize a creative heart and a belief in the goodness of our people. They are my way of expressing my belief in Kenya. I believe in our strength. I trust in our ability to move forward no matter the result of this election. What do you think, would you try something like this? Would you bring your country’s colors into your food for a celebration or a moment of reflection? I would love to hear your thoughts. Is this idea a yay or a nay for you?

However you choose to mark this election day, I hope it brings you peace. I also hope it brings you purpose and the reminder that life always continues. The sun will rise again, and we will continue building the Kenya we want, together.
