WHOLEWHEAT CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST

It's Friday! What plans do you have for the weekend? Are you heading out for some fun, staying in to relax, or maybe even taking a spontaneous trip somewhere? As for me, I am not quite sure yet. I will probably know what I am doing by the end of the day. But I need to focus because there is something far more delicious to talk about right now. Yes, you guessed it, French Toast, baby! I have always had a special place in my heart (and stomach) for eggs and bread. Put those two together and it is like a little celebration happening on your taste buds. French Toast is one of those dishes that feels indulgent and special, yet it is so incredibly simple to prepare. Honestly, I have no idea why I am not making and eating French Toast every single day of the week. It is that good and that easy to whip up.

Let me share a little knowledge with you about what exactly French Toast is. French Toast is also known by several other names depending on where you are in the world. Some call it Bombay Toast, Eggy Bread, German Toast, Torrija, Gypsy Toast, or Poor Knights. No matter the name, the concept remains fairly consistent. To make it, soak slices of bread, whether white or wholewheat, in a mixture of milk and beaten eggs. Then, fry them until they are golden brown.

There are so many variations on how to prepare French Toast. Each method adds a unique cultural twist to this already versatile dish. For instance, some people dip their bread slices in milk first. Then, they add the eggs afterwards. This can create a slightly different texture and flavor. But did you know that milk is not the only liquid that you can soak your bread in? That is right! You can use orange juice, rosewater, or even wine. These liquids can give your French Toast a new taste. It will have an unexpected taste profile. Whether you soak the bread in these liquids before cooking or after, the results can be truly delightful.

Take Hong Kong-style French Toast as another example. In Hong Kong, the method is a bit more indulgent. They deep-fry slices of bread that have been dipped in beaten eggs. The finished product is served with butter and generously topped with golden syrup or honey. It is crispy, rich, and absolutely mouthwatering.

Spain offers yet another twist with its version of French Toast known as Torrija. This version is traditionally prepared during Lent and Holy Week. Torrija is made by soaking stale bread in a mixture of wine, milk, honey, and spices. Then it is dipped in beaten egg and fried using olive oil. This process not only makes use of day-old bread in the most delicious way but also transforms the texture entirely. The soaking breaks down the fibers in the bread, giving it a crispy exterior and a smooth, almost custard-like interior. Finally, a dusting of cinnamon completes this beautiful dish.

With so many ways to enjoy French Toast, you can experiment endlessly and never grow tired of it. Today, I decided to go with a healthier option by using wholewheat bread instead of the traditional white bread. I was curious to see if it would still deliver the same satisfying experience. Let me tell you, it absolutely did not disappoint. The wholewheat bread added a nice nutty flavor. It had a slightly firmer texture, which held up wonderfully during the soaking and frying process.

What I love most about French Toast is its versatility. You can go sweet or savory. Top it with fresh fruits, drizzle it with maple syrup, or even slather it with peanut butter. If you are feeling fancy, add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. Feeling more on the savory side? Skip the sugar and instead pair it with cheese, herbs, or a slice of ham. There is really no limit to how creative you can get with this dish. And let us not forget how quick it is to prepare. From start to finish, making French Toast usually takes less than fifteen minutes. That means even on a busy morning, you can still have a warm, comforting breakfast that feels like a treat. It is also a great way to use up leftover bread that might otherwise go to waste. Instead of throwing out stale slices, give them new life with a bit of egg, milk, and a hot pan.

So what are you waiting for? You might be planning a relaxed Saturday morning. Perhaps it's a fancy brunch for friends. Or maybe a cozy breakfast for one. French Toast is always a great choice. This weekend, I strongly suggest you give it a try. Use whatever you have at home. It can be white bread, wholewheat, brioche, or even that forgotten baguette hiding at the back of your pantry. Add your own twist, make it your own, and enjoy every bite.

I have not quite figured out what my weekend plans are just yet. As for me, one thing is for sure, I will be making French Toast at some point. Maybe I will try a new liquid for soaking. I might also go all out with toppings and make it a full-blown brunch. Either way, I am excited. So there you have it. This is my ode to French Toast. It's the easiest and most satisfying dish you can make to kick off your weekend. Go ahead and treat yourself. You deserve it!

Happy Friday and bon appétit!
