TILAPIA BEACH KISUMU - RESTAURANT REVIEW

If there is a place that is known to have the freshest and most delicious fish in Kenya it's Kisumu! Today's restaurant review is about Tilapia Beach Restaurant. A tranquil little spot that sits near the lake as cool breezes hits your face. Tilapia Beach is not the only restaurant here, there are dozen of little restaurants surrounding it that serve fish, the main item on the menu. Travelling is always fun and this day we had decided to take a little tour of Kisumu City to see their main attractions. We had planned to go on a boat ride but running some errands left us with little time to enjoy that boat ride. So we opted to go for lunch instead. In this location there were many restaurants which made it a bit hectic getting to this specific spot. It was like market day as there were loud women at the entrances of all these little eating spots calling customers in. "Ingia upate samaki fresh daddy" (come in for fresh fish daddy),
"Kwa odhis, samaki tamu" (delicious fish at odhis'" they kept calling. Luckily for us we had a local who knew the best place we could have our meal.

Tilapia Beach has a calm breezy atmosphere as the setting is that of an open air eatery. Tables are sectioned into booth like spots. You can choose to have an intimate table setting of two or more or go for the group setting if you are many like we did. I loved that the place overlooked the lake making the eating experience that much more memorable and fun.

The waiters at Tilapia Beach were quite pleasant as they set the table for us. Drinks were first served as we waited for our order to be taken. There are options for those who take alcohol and non alcoholic drinkers. Some guys opted for sodas while others chose beer. We went ahead to order 7 plates of whole Fish, Ugali and French Fries.

I loved how their French fries were 'clean' (not oily or spots and debris/particles on them) they were long, chunky and very delicious!

For the fish, we ordered 6 fried with stew and 1 fried only without any soup. The fried fish stew was served with sukuma wiki (kales) on top. We had sides of kachumbari (onion, tomato, chili, coriander salad), and sauces. How delicious is that food!

Apparently when eating the fish, you are not supposed to dismantle it and place on individual plates. Since it is served on a large metallic platter, you only need to pinch your portion together with the vegetables on top and eat. You dig in until only the head and bones remain. Then you can turn the fish, repeat that  eating style, then finish with the head! "Hivo ndio samaki inakuliwa hapa" (that's how we eat fish here), I was informed by the real lakeside peeps 😀😊

As you can see, the 'dismantling' of the fish was properly done! Tilapia Beach restaurant is a place that I would most definitely come back for their fish. Plus I would love to sample other fish eating spots in Kisumu or lakeside as the town is popularly known. If you are a local, have you sampled food at this spot? If visiting, make sure to drop by and you will not regret feasting on "samak" (fish) at this location. Cheers to good places!
